Center pattern so it miters evenly at both corners. • Installation of Window Casings: Follow door casings, but install a window stool to add beauty and to avoid having to match four ornamented mitered corners (matching four mitered corners is easy if ornamentation is a delicate pattern). • Installation of Crowns, Bases, and Chairrails: Install any outside corners first and work back into inside corners. If a single moulding has two motifs, match the largest motif first. If a moulding has dentil and embossing, match the dentil first and let the other motif match as well as possible. With Mon Reale and multiple motifs, you may have to make several “adjusting cuts” to find the best pattern match. WELL-PROPORTIONED MOULDING DESIGNS l Contrary to a misconception that large-scale mouldings make a room seem small, the opposite is true. Properly-proportioned mouldings enhance room scale and proportion by creating a sense of loftiness. In a room with 8’- 9’ walls, large crowns appear to support and define the ceiling, thus increasing the feeling of height. Tall baseboards, wide casings, and ornate chairrails afford eye-catching architectural elements, fostering a comfortable and inviting environment. FINISHING OF HARDWOOD MOULDINGS AND WOODCARVINGS l • Caulk, fill and sand well • Apply quality stains or paints • Sand between coats as needed • If staining Poplar, 2 applications of stain may be needed for depth of color and for adequate coverage • Apply glazing, gold leafing, and antiquing after applying finish coats (sealer, lacquer, other) to initial paint or stain • After applying glaze, wipe to desired coverage, and apply final coat of sealer to create sheen and depth • Always finish a sample before starting if multi-step finishes are involved 45° 38º 62° 25° crown profiles denoted all other crowns CO693,CO694 only CR880 only CONSIDERATIONS WHEN SELECTING MOULDINGS • Desired Interior Style • The value placed on a well-moulded interior • Room proportions and ceiling heights • Moulding shapes: Bold (masculine) or Delicate (feminine) • Barriers that may dictate where trim can or cannot be used (air vents, electrical outlets, tall windows, odd wall or ceiling shapes) • Your budget - budgeting for mouldings • Contrast of wall, ceiling, and trim colors CEILING HEIGHT CASE CORNICE BASE CHAIRRAIL 8’ 9’ 10’ 12’ 16’ 20’ 3 1/2 - 5 1/2” 5 1/2 - 10” 10 - 20” 10 - 20” 18 - 25” 18 - 34” 3 1/2 - 4 1/2” 4 - 5” 4 - 6 1/2” 5 - 7” 5 - 7” 5 - 7” 5 - 8” 8 - 10” 8 - 10” 8 - 12” 8 - 12” 8 - 12” 3 - 6” 4 - 6 1/2” 4 - 7” 4 - 7” 4 - 7” 4 - 8” TRADITIONAL PROPORTIONS TOOL SETUP ON CROWNS All of White River Hardwood’s crowns project off of the wall at a 38º angle with these exceptions: • CR880 projects off of the wall at a 28º angle.
