Verdura, designed in collaboration with Rocky Mountain Hardware, is a direct result of this valuable insight. The idea for this new hardware collection was born when Beth Bernitt, a Florida- based senior principal at HOK, recognized a synergy between the product needs of her healthcare clients and the inherent antimicrobial properties of copper based alloys. Bernitt joined forces with Mark Banholzer, a healthcare architect in HOK’s Chicago office, to design a door hardware collection that is sleek and modern to fit the aesthetic most often specified in health and wellness facilities. Rocky Mountain Hardware partnered with the team to bring this design to life by creating lost wax molds to produce the smoothest surfaces necessary for the intended application. VERDURA COLLECTION ON PAGES 42–47 DESIGNED BY WITH A WELL-EARNED REPUTATION as a designer of exceptional furniture for more than three decades, Ted Boerner has created pieces for a range of markets, from medium range prêt-à-porter furniture to high-end, made-to-order couture work. A natural fit for Boerner, who has always taken great care in specifying complimentary hardware for his cabinets and furniture, this collaboration in bronze incorporates design principles that Rocky Mountain Hardware is known for, yet brings a fresh new approach. The five collections–Brut, Shift, Empire, Bird and Tab–offer a range of sculptural looks, including chunky handles and asymmetrical knobs and pulls, each embracing Boerner’s signature balance of intimacy and emotion. “These pieces are created in relationship to the eye and the hand,” Boerner says. “They celebrate touch, feeling and an immediate sense of human scale.”The line is produced with sand and investment casting techniques that employ a high level of handwork and give each piece a distinct feel.
